Group life insurance is a type of life insurance policy that covers a group of people, typically employees of a company or members of an organization. It provides financial protection for the group’s dependents in the event of the policyholder’s death.
The primary benefit is that it provides financial security to your beneficiaries in the event of your death. This can include coverage amounts sufficient to cover funeral expenses, outstanding debts, and provide ongoing support to dependents.
Eligibility usually includes full-time employees, and sometimes part-time employees, of the organization providing the insurance. Some plans also offer coverage options for spouses and dependents, though this may depend on the specific policy.
The basic coverage amount varies by employer and policy but is often a multiple of your annual salary (e.g., one or two times your salary). Many plans offer the option to purchase supplemental coverage at additional cost.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance provides additional benefits if you die or suffer certain types of injuries (like loss of limbs or eyesight) due to an accident. It is sometimes included as part of the group life insurance plan or offered as an add-on.
Generally, premiums for group life insurance are a deductible business expense for the employer. For employees, premiums are not taxable for coverage amounts up to $50,000. Coverage above $50,000 may be considered taxable income.
Employees who leave may have the option to convert their group life insurance policy to an individual one. This benefit reassures employees, knowing they can maintain coverage if they transition to another job or retire.
